guys since lately ko lang na-acquire carens ko at kayo baka medyo matagal-tagal na, share naman kayo ng overtaking stories o kaya "iwan" stories (yung tipong may sumusunod sa inyo o tutok sa likod tapos apak sa gas kayo at iwan nyo sya/eat my dust hehehe).... this will help showcase the power of our rides.... let me start... one day i was travelling at q.c. circle tapos may tutok palagi na gen1 CRV sa likod ko kahit anu lane ako at swerve nandun pa din sa likod ko... eh asar ako sa ganun mga tailgater so pagdating sa U.P. Shell commonwealth at medyo lumuwag na trafik binaon ko na ang gas and i accelerated from 60kph to 130 kph REALLY quickly... leaving the CR-V way behind.... kita ko sa rearview ko pilit sya hataw at swerve din to catch up pero wala talaga... hehehe.... im proud of my carens.... there are rare times naman pag stoplight sa kalayaan ave cor v.luna road... pag nag GO na ang light i let my carens rip redline from standstill.... leaving all cars kasabay ko behind... keyso mapa Civic, Galant, Pajero o anu pa man..... hehehe... aksaya sa krudo pero sometimes rationale ko na lang "decarbonizing" ng exhaust.... (especially that i know i spend most of my time in heavy city traffic and its now my chance to clear my exhaust system of performance-robbing carbon deposits) sana lang walang mga tint mga iniiwanan ko kasi i would very much like to see their jaws drop with the carens' acceleration.... ;D ;D ;D share din kayo stories lalo na sa overtaking, highway, at mountain road driving.... i havent taken my carens out of town yet

reminder lang guys... let's be careful all the time. you'll never know baka may road anger yang ma-overtaken natin. i know that our beloved carens is very powerful that sometimes we'd like to test kung hanggang san kaya yan. pero prioritize your safety

I sometimes feel guilty doing this. But I had to..
If you've been to Baguio an happen to use Marcos highway in going up, there is this steep uphill climb along Taloy Sur in Tuba Benguet. It's a long stretch of uphill road just right after the flyover.
EVerytime I use that road, I can't help but overtake almost all (take note-ALL) of the vehicles. I have limited choices. It's either I pass the road on a slow pace as all the others or just overtake them. I always choose and zoom to the 2nd option.
Everytime I do that, it makes my heart pound not because I am not confident about the Carens' ability to climb but on the possible reaction of other motorists. But I had to do it because once my Carens gets the momentum, its not going to be practical to downshift and waste fuel. I don't know if some of you have tried that.
Just this Sunday, I overtook a 2nd gen CRV on that climb. What I did was I stepped further on the pedal and left them. I virtually hugged the opposite lane when it was free. Naka 4th and 5th gears ako during those times.
Kung minsan nayayabangan ako sa sarili by doing this. Even if do overtake, I still observe road courtesy and defensive driving. Lucky for me though dahil mabagal lang sila magdrive kaya madaling mag overtake..I have high respects for them hehehe
It's a joy to drive it on long trips kaya panay din ang long trip ko. Just stay safe on the road kahit na maraming temptation to go fast and furious...hehehe

yes all of us should pls practice defensive and not offensive driving.... sir hanren said it well ... its not our intention na manlait ng ibang sasakyan or motorists... and you're not worried about making the overtaking manuever but you're worried how others will react to being overtaken... baka ma-misinterpret na mayabang ka... i started this thread not to promote road rage or aggressive driving.... though sometimes the "boy racer" in us gets through... medyo careful din ako...ayoko lang ng mga tailgater na sobra manutok sa likod parang linta even though im sure im just minding my own business and i did not in any way provoke or cut that tailgater ... saka praning ako when im being followed from behind... baka mamaya may bad intentions... ive also been waiting for sir hanren's post... ive been driving na kasi for 16 years and im really experienced in out-of-town driving having been to Baguio, Cagayan Valley, Laoag, Pangasinan, Batangas, Laguna, Bicol, and other far flung places either for family vacation or business trips... i can personally relate to sir hanren's experience in going up baguio since have gone up all three mountain pass roads (kennon, naguilian, and marcos) plus the fact i almost grew up driving in Dalton Pass (Nueva Ecija to Nueva Vizcaya mountain zigzag roads)... and i must say... if you LOVE driving and have a superior vehicle, then you can have a driving style that can be both fast, yet safe (read A. Tom Topper's book, "Very Advanced Driving")... everytime i go to Baguio i almost pass about 90-95% of all vehicles going up. pag naka momentum ka na sa paakyat, like sir hanren says, mahirap po mag down shift at mabitin sometimes... pero kung sure ka naman na walang kasalubong or ka-head on then why not... i sure dont want to waste time staying behind a smoke belching slow truck or slow vehicle going up a hill... its really hard to define or state the feeling... you just have to attack the mountain roads hard and fast...(note: i dont know how to drift and im not talking about drifting hehehe) i also cant help but overtake... my past rides have been a Civic VTi, Strada 4x4, gen2 CR-V,Montero Sport TDIC 4x4, and now currently Hiace D4-D and Carens... hindi naman ako super tulin sa akyatan kasi na-oovertakan pa ako ng mga Range Rover, Porsche, (syempre naman di ba iwanan tayo nila) .... kahit mga kaskasero na Hilux, Nissan Patrol at mga Vios 1.5G pinauuna ko na... im not THAT crazy to risk my life and overtake recklessly and sometimes onto head on traffic like others... pero as ive said... you can be fast yet safe.. think of it as hataw yet 80% ka lang of your limits... the other 20% is concentration and THINKING of how you can be fast yet safe by analyzing the situation ahead and acting accordingly... saka kaya talaga ng car na dala ko at the time... having more torque and power than most of the cars i meet on the road... so i do what's natural... to overtake and leave them behind... im also guilty and surprised sometimes that on a two-way highway i pass not just one but sometimes two or three cars ALL at once... yet i do it safely and im amazed by the vehicle im always driving... it just GOES... ;D it makes driving more "INTERESTING" because i dont fall asleep and im ALMOST ALWAYS "thinking ahead" and planning my steps in advance.... hehehe napahaba, i hope ma'am bingski doesnt find my post too defensive but sometimes its really a "guy thing" po to drive a bit fast and a little aggressive... i know cuz until now my wife doesnt get it (although i really doubt her sometimes kasi kaskasera din magdrive wife ko pag ako nakaupo sa likod at galit din siya pag nabibitin sa akyatan ) so with all things said... sometimes yung hataw moments mo gets "BURNED IN" to your memory and make great stories with other friends who like to share their unforgettable experience... so pls post more interesting stories... while being SAFE and DEFENSIVE.... i hope huwag na kayo magpost ng mga kuwento na nag-cut pa kayo at nanghahamon... its not my true intention...

I had this experience one time while going down Marcos Hway. This Ford Ranger kept following me (tailgating) and I was crusing down slowly kasi si misis nasa harap at buntis nga siya ngayon. I hesitated to step on the gas dahil ayokong magmaintain ng mabilis na pace na nasa likod ko yung ranger lest I provoke a road race. I slowed down many times so that it could overtake me. Maluwag naman ang daan sa Marcos ang I openly see free lanes on the opposite side pero andun pa rin sya likod ko. Medyo praning din ako during that time and considering na kami lang dalawa halos ang nasa daan. When I encountered another slow vehicle ahead lon the road, nag overtake na lang ako on a free lane at pinaharurot ko na lang. You know the end of the story..hehehe If you've experienced driving to Baguio using Kennon road, mas maappreciate mo yung power ng Carens. Imagine having to overtake 10-18 wheeler trucks on such na narrow road like Kennon. They're usually very slow, and are usually dangerous dahil yung iba ang karga nila mga malalaking bato. But i don't actually recommend that you do this lalo na kapag hindi pa kayo familiar sa Kennon. Daming blind curves at makipot pa ang daan. Better take Marcos Highway instead. Sir Odie..you said it well and you said it right. Let me add this motto: "It's hard to be humble when you're driving a Carens"..

maam bingski wife ko din pati best friend nya (taga Baguio dati) parang lalaki mag-drive.... hehehehe.... pero ayaw aminin.... sir hanren i know the feeling.... sometimes pag may nakatutok sa likod tapos tabi ka naman pero ayaw ka unahan... sometimes ayaw ko din mag overtake ng alanganin or mauna then thinking nila nakikipagkarera ka... kaya minsan tuloy nasisira driving groove ko or rhythm (compared to walang kasabay sa road).... pero still i'd rather drive long hours on a long trip highway/mountain road than spend an hour in metro manila traffic. sometimes gusto ko mag "ECO" run na 1800-2000 rpm lang maintain kong engine speed each gear (parang sa Petron XCS challenge) but i find it HARDER to drive cuz you constantly have to remember to keep the revs down low and plan ahead not to disrupt your momentum (lalo na pag may jeep or trike ahead)... bakit kaya ganun... when you drive normally and dont think about anything--- its relaxing. When you drive aggressively and when you drive economically--- its more tiring... so in short... just drive normally !!!! hahahahahaha....

kaya dapat disciplined kang driver once na nasa steering wheel kana ng carens. ako laging may temptation for me to go fast lalo na sa open highway and stoplight pag drive ko ng carens. hindi naman ako ganito sa mga previous car ko. lakas kasi torque/accelaration ng carens kaya very tempting talaga ;D

Tama ka sir Odie.. pati sa NLEX at SCTEX (yes, medyo "disciplinado" na ako dito hehehe), I constantly have to look at the speedo takot akong mahuli pag lumagpas ako ng 120 kph. Alam nyo pag natikman mo na kasi yung speed na out of this world, iba na ang pakiramdam-you constantly want to try it out again... hehe It gets frustrating sometimes kasi nga panay check mo sa ibaba (speedo) but your vehicle is tempting you to at least try to zoom past 130 or 140 kph. But by doing this, you sometimes lose sight of the road. It's very tiring because you have to condition yourself mentally and physically. Maraming ginagawa ang utak (coordinating everything) as opposed to just driving normally - wala ka ng ibang paingkaka abalahan.. (OT) Sir Val - sorry we failed to meet for our Pangasinan eb last Holy Week.. went to NAIA to last Black Saturday may hinatid. Hope next time magkita na ulit tayo...

eto lang observations ko sa Carens ko...
im not so satisfied with hard and straight acceleration from full stop (from 0 to 70/80 kph).... especially when its going through 1st and 2nd gear... parang hindi pa rin ganun masyadong matulin. maybe because as per website specs, 0-100 kph is 13 or so secs (lalo pag sanay ka sa 1.6L sedan usually 11 secs lang).
however, im VERY satisfied in its PASSING acceleration (moving acceleration, example from 30 kph to 70 kph or from 60 kph to 130 kph). Napansin ko when you keep the revs between 2,000 and 3,500 rpm, best performance na ito especially in 3rd and 4th gear (automatic transmission).... the last 1,000 rpnm (3500 to max 4500 rpm redline) medyo wala na masyadong acceleration or output. well, peak torque naman talaga ng Carens CRDi is 1800-2500 rpm so above it im sure dramatic na ang drop ng torque, kaya ganun...parang kapos na.
so in short, i noticed that the best performance of the Carens (when overtaking) is achieved WITHOUT bringing it to redline or subjecting it to hard acceleration. each time i reach 2500 to 3000 rpm i can ease off the gas pedal to help it move up to a higher gear (auto trans) and continue its momentum/ forward acceleration.

I had another overtaking experience just yesterday evening..and this is one experience I'd rather forget.
Along the highway in San Fabian Pangasinan, I overtook a slow moving Lancer boxtype. I thought I could leisurely make a pass but I was about to get the shock of my life.
To my surprise, the boxtype driver, instead of giving way, stepped on the gas so I had to adjust my overtaking manuever and hug the opposite lane a little longer cause I'd want to give more allowance between me and the boxtype.
So I was already approaching a curve (because I had to hug the opposite lane a little longer) when another vehicle which was moving fast appeared on the opposite lane where I was. Alanganin na lagay ko kasi kailangan ko pa kasi magdownshift to third gear so that ate up some precious milliseconds
I had no choice but to step on the accelerator. Hindi ako binigo ng Carens. It gave me the needed boost but I knew that I was inches away from an accident.
I had mixed feelings afterwards. Na highblood ako and I wanted to stop and confront the boxtype driver but I was already way ahead (plus, hindi na maipinta yung mukha ni misis). The boxtype, as soon as he realized what he has done, has decided to slow down kasi di ko na siya makita sa likod ko. At that time, nangibabaw pa rin yung concern sa family ko so I decided to move on and just count from 1 to 10.
Nangangatog pa rin tuhod ko. Hanggang ngayon..
Still, stay safe on the road.
Lesson: Never underestimate the power of human stupidity. They may come when you least expect it. In my case, it came with a boxtype.

Thanks sir Vinrem.. talk about the law of averages ba yon..na sa bawat 100 na drivers na namemeet o nakakasabay mo sa daan eh 1 o 2 ang irresponsable. kaya ngayon..sureball na lang ako pag mag oovertake. I won't leave everything to chance lalo na't kasama ang family ko palagi sa out of town trips. Try to be extra extra alert when making a pass even if we know that our Carens has the power.
